Hoop-free Referrals preferred

Struggled for an apt title for this blurb. ‘Referrals’ are the main focus of this blog. Hopefully, it resonates with the odd bargain hunter out there.

I have two examples of referrals from 2 different platforms. One makes your invited referees jump through hoops, while the other ensures the hoops don’t get in your way; or at least minimize the number of hoops you have to jump through. Just so we’re not lost in translation here; by hoops, I mean requirements and conditions set by the institution or the establishment offering incentives to prospective/new customers.

Case in point: Revolut; a trading/banking app asks that you invite your friends to use the Revolut app; then you (the user/existing customer) and your invited friend/contact receive a reward. The rewards are incentivized by the offer of cash to both parties — the invitee and the invited — you get the drift.

Gives me the odd chuckle when I see the list of my somewhat futile attempt at hustling my ‘brethren’. The prompt by Revolut would often arrive via email or in-app notification. Here’s a sample:

Referral call to action in the Revolut app

So then, good customers like myself (yes, I do say so; you’ll see why shortly), put the word out to friends and contacts. However, there is a catch. A few hoops to jump through.

Here’s a sample list of ‘hurdles’ and hoops for my invited friends to jump through:

Referral hoops

So then off one goes, shilling the app to friends and contacts. Often times, the hoops are such a hassle to get through. Hoop number 5 for example; a tad tedious I dare say.

All said and done, here’s the result of my shilling the Revolut app. Real people were invited. Not bots. All near misses. Oh gosh!

Near misses?

All these folks were invited successfully and are now customers and users of the Revolut app. However, they missed the ‘hoops’. Thus, the good customer who has sought to convert friends and contacts to customers; gets nothing. Surely this system has got to be reviewed.

On the flip side however, I shall share my experience of a hoop-free referral that’s straight to the point.

There’s a cryptocurrency trading app called Crypto.com. I have used the app for about a year. Here’s a sample of their hoop-free referral of which I speak:

One hoop referral

This presents fewer hoops and hassles for invited folks.

For transparency; here’s a recent outcome for 2 referrals:

Thanks to those friends and contacts who heeded this call and honoured the referral.

No conclusion required in this blurb other than to ask Revolut to chill with the hoops! Compensate for referred customers at the very least.

If you’re keen on crypto, here’s my Crypto.Com referral with hardly any hoops to jump through.

And for those who fancy some adventure and hoop jumping; here’s my Revolut referral link.

This is not financial advice. Do some research before you venture into any of these, however.

Happy, healthy and prosperous new year to you! Here’s to 2022!

As always, thanks for reading.
